3D Measurements of Apollo 14 Landing Site

(NASA) - Can we measure the size and shape of equipment and other objects on the moon using orbital images from the current Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission?

As an example, to demonstrate the precise 3D measurement capability of the LROC instrument's stereo imagery, three objects and the astronauts' footpaths at the Apollo 14 landing site are measured and their 3D models reconstructed.

In the zoomed image below, the lunar module can be identified by its deck (red points) and distinct [...]

Can an Immobile Spirit Rover Survive the Martian Winter?

Mission managers for the Mars Exploration Rover program announced this week that the Spirit rover will likely never rove again on Mars. But that doesn't mean her life is over. However, with the rover virtually immobile and stuck in a sand trap, she currently is in a very vulnerable and potentially "deadly" situation as winter approaches on Mars' southern hemisphere. Pointing the rover's solar panels towards the sun is critical if the rover is to survive, and the rover team has just a handful of drives to make it so. And the winters are long and harsh on Mars. "The temperatures will be colder than anything Spirit has experienced before," said John Callas, project manager for the MER mission. "This is a much more difficult and dangerous situation for Spirit, and we're heading into a regime where vehicle is going to get colder than it ever has."

What is Spirit facing, and what are her odds?

The Solar Dynamics Observatory in 3.5 Minutes

This great new video (just uploaded today!) does a great job of explaining the upcoming Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission, which is slated to launch on Feb. 9, 2010. SDO will provide a new eye on the sun that will deliver solar images with 10 times better resolution than high-definition television. This mission will zoom in on the cause of severe space weather?solar activity such as sunspots, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections. It will give us the best look ever at our Sun.

For more information see our detailed preview article on SDO.

Astronomy Without A Telescope ? Wake Me When We Get There

Living on a planet comes with certain advantages. Gravity, for instance. The only reason hot air rises on Earth is that colder, denser air will always fall to displace it upwards. On the International Space Station everyone has to sleep next to a fan or they end up being enveloped in a bubble of their exhaled carbon dioxide (or worse).(...)

NASA?s Solar Crown Jewel Bolted atop Atlas Rocket

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is lifted atop the Atlas V rocket. Credit: NASA/Jack Pfaller

The ?Crown Jewel? of NASA?s solar science research fleet, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, was transported from the Astrotech payload processing facility outside KSC to the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF) at Launch Complex 41 in the overnight hours of Jan 26. It?s standard operating procedure to transport such highly valuable payloads after midnight, when the least amount of traffic is on the road in order to minimize any possibility for an accident. The $848 million spacecraft was moved at about 10 MPH on a specially designed flat bed truck for a trip lasting roughly four hours.(...)

"Horsefeathers" ? NGC 7770/71 Galaxy Group by Ken Crawford

Away in Pegasus and 225 million light years from Earth, a barred spiral galaxy designated as NGC 7771 spans across 164,000 light years of space. It is a part of a small galaxy group consisting of lenticular galaxy NGC 7770 to the south and edge-on NGC 7771A to the west connected to magnificent spiral NGC 7769. But horsefeathers doesn't mean this little clump of galactic partners is nonsense… Horsefeathers are what we need to make and intergalactic duster just to see them! (...)

Omicron Tauri

Omicron Tauri(? Tauri) este o stea in constelatia Taurus(Taurul).

Pi Tauri

Pi Tauri(? Tauri) este o stea in constelatia Taurus(Taurul).

spring cleaning for firefox

It's not quite Spring yet, but with the release of Firefox 3.6, now would be a great time to give your browser a good cleaning.

First, make sure you're on the latest Firefox. In the Help menu, select Check for updates... and apply any updates offered.

Next, let's look at your extensions. Go to Tools -> Add-ons... and select the "Extensions" tab. Scroll through your list of extensions and if you see one that you're not using regularly, go ahead and click the Disable button. This won't remove the add-on, it'll just stop it loading up when you start Firefox. You can always re-enable it if you decide you need it back. Next, look and see if you have any extensions that you disabled in the past that you probably won't be using again. Let's remove those. Simply click the Uninstall button.

Go ahead and restart Firefox at this point. You might already notice a big speed-up in Firefox's start-up time.

Now that we've taken care of extensions, let's look at your plug-ins. Plug-in vendors are notorious for adding plug-ins to Firefox without asking you so you might have a few there you don't need or want. To check, go to Tools -> Add-ons again. This time, select the "Plug-ins" tab. Scroll through that list. In my experience the only plug-ins that are really useful are Flash and Silverlight. (and the "Mozilla Default Plug-in"). Unless you know you need it, go ahead and disable any other plug-ins in the list. This will probably help Firefox perform better and certainly keep you safer. You can always re-enable the plug-in if you find that you need it later.

Go ahead and restart Firefox so these plug-ins get unloaded from your browser.

One final clean-up I like to do is to "vacuum" my history and bookmarks database. There is an extension called Vacuum Places that makes this really easy. Once you install the extension and restart Firefox, you should see a button in your statusbar that will trigger the clean-up. You should only have to do this once (and you can then disable or uninstall the add-on) because Firefox 3.6 now does its own periodic cleaning. This will just give you a jump so you don't have to wait on Firefox to do it automatically.

With those simple steps, you'll probably have a much faster, more stable, and overall happier Firefox.

Full Moon and crimes

I love the sight of a full moon , poets love them and so are the criminals......... yes it is believed that the crime rate is high on a full moon , although there is no solid proof regarding it.

Even the scientists cannot give a correlation between the crime rates on a full moon lit night , babies conceived or born during that time or any other such occurences.

It is just a myth and nothing else . It is believed that we usually notice increase in such activities during a full moon night as we remember a full moon phase more than other moon phases.

If a crime is committed on a full moon night people remember it more as it is obvious than when the moon was a crescent.
crimes, births, and strange occurrences happen all month long, but only those that occur around Full Moon cause people to talk about them.
For everyone who love to watch a full moon would like to mention that 30th January,2009 will be a full moon lit night and it will be the biggest full moon of 2010.
